That would explain it.  If you have an old VS80COMNTOOLS variable around
then the command line build will get confused.

We will fix this in the next release but that's still a week or two
away.

Yes.  

Pieter: There is a bug in the Windows c.bat and pal.bat script, which
confuses people -- on Linux these will support both the "c foo" and "c
foo.c" syntax, on Windows only the former works and the latter dies both
for c.bat and pal.bat with some random confusing error message.

Can you fix this please so that it gets into the next release?
